“Calm before the storm”
Among all the noise and the fumes of an international bike race, it’s the stillness of 20 year old Scot, Dan Kinloch, which sets him apart.
In a sport where hundredths of a second on each corner make the difference between a winner and an alsoran,
this ability to focus drew the attention of former world champion Ron Haslam when Dan was just 14. Taking part in a practice day, Haslam noticed that when other younger riders were high on adrenaline, Dan was flat calm.
Focused and dedicated to winning, Dan is already one of the top 20 racers in the country in his class with countless wins behind him. At 20 years old, Dan from Glasgow is embarking on the 600 Superstock season in 2011 and aiming to conquer Supersport in 2012.
No stranger to the ever present TV cameras and with his own loyal family following already, the young Scot will test his machine and that steely nerve in 12 races across the UK this year, and 24 next year as the season – and the competition – really revs up.
“On a bike before he could walk”
Family legend has it that Dan jumped on a 2 wheeler pushbike almost before he could toddle. On Mini Moto by 12 and 125cc by 15 Dan has never wavered in his commitment to being a world-beater.
“I’m always seeking ways to push just that little bit further” he says. “When I was younger, I’d follow the older, faster boys as they pull you on. I’m now one of the fastest riders in my class but I’m constantly pushing to shave that last fraction of a second off my performance, every time”.
Dan’s routine is based around physical as well as mental
strength and he trains at least four times a week to improve his cardiovascular fitness and endurance to keep racefit.
He’s also had support from fellow Scot, legend Neil McKenzie, who encouraged Dan to keep going early on after he took a knock on an uncompetitive bike, which Dan describes as “held together with duct tape and cable ties”.
In his first visit at Anglesey Race Circuit, Dan got back on and won the very next race, beating the 4 times previous champion in the process.
